A mother in The Bronx allegedly told cops her infant had been attacked with a baseball bat to cover up for having dropped the baby on his head. She has since been charged with falsifying a police report; the infant was critically injured, but his condition has since improved.
It was initially reported that baseball bat-wielding attackers hit 2-month-old Michael Hodge in the head shortly after midnight on Tuesday. Michael was strapped to his father's chest at the time, according to the report, and police were led to believe the attackers meant to hit the adult.
But upon further investigation, police say they found that the baby's mother, 22-year-old Daphany Sanders, had fabricated the confrontation. In fact, authorities say Michael had been in her care when he was injured, and they believe she dropped him on his head.
Michael suffered "serious brain damage" and was treated at Jacobi Hospital. He has since opened his eyes and is expected to survive.
The city Administration for Children's Services, with whom Sanders has reportedly had history, is investigating the incident.
