New Jersey State Police divers found a body on Saturday morning that they believe is 55-year-old Danny Peters, who fell into Kill Van Kull on Friday night. Peters, a Brooklynite, was docking a barge for loading at the International Matex Tank Terminal close to 8 p.m. on Friday, and fell when the ladder he was descending to shore abruptly shifted, Bayonne police Sgt. David Conte told The Jersey Journal.

A worker at the petrochemical port facility saw Peters fall and ran to retrieve a life-ring, but when he returned, Peters was out of sight, the sergeant said. Coast Guard and other rescue divers looked for the fallen worker into the night, but called off the search around 12:30 a.m. They resumed the following morning, and found the body near the sight of the fall minutes into the operation, at 10:47 a.m.

Conte said police are treating the fall as "an industrial accident."

Kill Van Kull separates the North Shore of Staten Island from Bayonne's industrial waterfront. IMTT, a major national chemical storage company, deferred an inquiry from News12 to New Jersey State Police.
