Yesterday afternoon, a minivan crashed in Astoria—the driver reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack while driving his family, including a baby grandchild.
Police say the crash occurred at 35th Avenue and 21st Street. The 2002 Kia Sedona had jumped the 35th Avenue curb then hit a hydrant before flipping onto its side. The driver, Anthony Boyd, 45, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
According to the Post, Boyd had a heart attack: "Shocked bystanders raced over and began breaking the car’s windows to free the man’s 44-year old wife, 28-year-old daughter and two grandchildren, ages 10 and 1, cops and witnesses said."
One witness noted that many people were trying to help, "The little boy, the baby, with braids, he crawled out himself. [The man who found him] was trying rock him, calm him down. But the baby kept screaming.”
According to the NYPD, the minivan's five passengers were taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition, while a pedestrian who was struck by debris was taken to Mount Sinai in stable condition.
