As mentioned yesterday, Brooklyn Borough President and stoop drinking enthusiast Marty Markowitz bought his first home in Windsor Terrace for $1.45 million, which it turns out, was partially funded for by the Albany Econo Lodge.
Markowitz took a bad fall outside the hotel in the winter of 2001, where he was staying while attending Senate sessions in Albany. An anonymous source told the News, "It was a really bad accident. He shattered his ankle in three places and had to have serious reconstructive surgery." The proceeds from the slip-and-fall suit, of which he received $255,000 according to the News, along with the the sale of his Manhattan Beach home are helping to finance his new Brooklyn digs.
Markowitz is still in some hot water for illegally using his chief of staff, Carlo Scissura, as a private lawyer for that property deal, even though a Markowitz spokesman said the work was done off-hours and without pay. Dick Dadey of the Citizens Union told the News, "This not only appears to be an illegal gift, it's a shocking display of hubris."
