A man remains missing after getting swept up in the current at Rockaway Beach on Sunday.

The man, who has not been identified, apparently leapt into the violent waters off of Beach Ninth Street in Far Rockaway just before midnight during Sunday night's storm, the Post reports.

A woman who was with him at the time followed the man into the water, attempting to pull him out. Emergency workers were able to pluck her from the swell, but her friend could not be located.

Severe thunderstorms eventually forced rescuers to suspend their search. “We were out there for the rescue, but had to call it off because the weather was so bad,” a police source told the tabloid.

The search effort continued on Monday to no avail. Police believe the man may have been pulled down by a riptide, and that his jump may have been a suicide attempt.

The woman was treated for minor injuries.
