A 66-year-old retired postal worker was struck and killed by a garbage truck on Friday afternoon in the same intersection where Marilyn Dershowitz was killed in July of 2011. Victim Thomas Berry was about to cross Ninth Avenue at West 29th Street on Friday afternoon when he tripped and fell under the wheels of a passing garbage truck. The driver remained at the scene, and no criminality is suspected. "He was a hard, honest worker. He was a gem of a guy,” a neighborhood bartender told the Post, which also notes that Berry was likely walking to the mail facility to pick up his final paycheck.
A witness to the incident, John Carmitchel, told DNAinfo that the truck driver "didn't see [Berry]" and that "It wasn't [the truck driver's] fault." The intersection is near a dark stretch of road underneath the Morgan General U.S. Mail Facility. Dershowitz was riding her bike with her husband when she was struck and killed by a mail truck. The truck driver was recently acquitted of wrongdoing by a jury.
According to the most recent motor vehicle accident report from the NYPD [PDF], 276 cyclists and 1,034 pedestrians were injured in traffic in November 2012. Eight pedestrians were killed.
