Dog is man's best friend, but is spending $60,000 in a custody fight over a dog too much—or too little? Craig Dershowitz is trying to get a puggle named Knuckles back from his ex-girlfriend, claiming that she kidnapped him when they broke up. Dershowitz has turned to a website to raise money for legal fees and says, "My ex has a wealthy family that is backing her. I do not. I am paying for this out of my own savings while also helping my mom through her medical issues. My ex is filing motion after frivolous motion just knowing that each time my lawyer responds it takes me one step closer to having nothing at all. It is a game I cannot win, but, with the justice system the way it is, it is a game I must play."
He told the Post, "I’ve pretty much gone through my life savings. It’s worth it." His court filling says that ex Sarah Brega "took unilateral control of Knuckles and kidnapped him" while Brega claims that the dog was gifted to her: "Knuckles lives a happy and healthy life in California with me, where he has ample room to play, and lives in close proximity to a beach for off-leash dog-park outings." But Dershowitz argues, "He loved New York. He’s a very happy dog. He’ll be happy wherever he is — especially if he’s with his dad and the friends he grew up with." A judge has initially sided with Dershowitz, but he says "all these decisions need to be certified and legalized (no, that is not the actual term) and I can no longer afford it on my own."
Here's Dershowitz's video plea—if you contribute $10, you get a virtual smooch from him; if you give $250, you get to play fetch with Knuckles... if he ever makes it back to New York:
