A 31-year-old woman was attacked by a man with a machete in Bryant Park this morning.

An NYPD spokeswoman said that the incident occurred at around 11:33 a.m. near the corner of Bryant Park at 42nd Street. The spokeswoman said that the suspect, a male in his mid-50s, slashed the woman in her right arm with a machete. The spokeswoman called the attack "unprovoked."

The woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, while the suspect was arrested on the scene; charges against him are pending. Police say they recovered the machete used in the attack.

Video taken at the scene shows the suspect being subdued:

In November of 2013, two people were shot by a 16-year-old while they were ice skating in Bryant Park. But as of last week [PDF], the number of felony assaults reported in the Midtown South Precinct is down by 11.4% from last year.

[UPDATE]The Times identifies the suspect as Frederick Young, a homeless man who has 23 prior arrests, including one for menacing someone with a machete around five years ago.
