A man was shot in the back on the Lower East Side this afternoon and police are still looking for his shooter. According to the NYPD, the incident occurred around 3 p.m. near the entrance to the East Broadway F stop—which the gunman may have escaped into and disappeared.

The shooting took place near the corner of Madison and Rutgers Streets and the motive is not immediately clear. However, the NYPD press office tells us the victim's injuries are not fatal. He's being treated at NY Downtown Hospital.

ABC reports that after the shooting the MTA did "get a report of an armed man on an F train at that station, but a search did not lead to the suspect." The NYPD has not yet released a description of the assailant.
