A man was killed in Midtown this week when he was fatally struck by a driver who was reversing his double-parked SUV.

Police say the incident happened around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Jesus Cepeda, 59, was crossing East 44th Street near Second Avenue when a 57-year-old man began reversing his 2011 Ford Escape. The car was double-parked midblock on the south side of East 44th Street, and police say the driver struck Cepeda with the rear of the vehicle, knocking him to the ground and causing him to strike his head on the pavement.

Cepeda, an Ozone Park resident, suffered severe head trauma, and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital. He was pronounced dead on Wednesday.

The NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad has determined that Cepeda was crossing East 44 Street outside the marked crosswalk when the incident happened. They add that no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
