Yesterday, a man was shot at 14 Maujer Street in Brooklyn around 5 p.m. It turns out the victim, who was an ex-con who served time for murder, was inside his mother's apartment building.

Vargas was found on the second floor. Relatives told the Daily News that Miguel Vargas, 52, was taking care of his mother who suffered from dementia. His sister said she didn't think his death was related to his past, which included serving 25 years for second-degree murder, "He didn't bother nobody. He was always to himself." A friend added, "He was working, staying out of trouble. I'm gonna miss him. I really am."

Witnesses say they saw a car leaving the scene after the shooting; cops are apparently looking for a gold-colored SUV.
