A man was struck and killed by a large tractor truck early this morning in Midtown. According to police, 26-year-old Ken Baker of Binghamton was walking north on 6th Avenue at the West 47th Street intersection at around 3:47 a.m. when a 2007 Peterbilt tractor truck without a trailer turned left onto 47th Street from 6th Avenue and struck Baker. The driver of the truck remained at the scene, while Baker was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
Baker's death is the city's third traffic fatality in three days: on Friday night, the driver of a black Honda Civic struck and killed an elderly man on West 114th Street and fled the scene. And early yesterday morning, 21-year-old pre-med student Carolina Berszakiewicz was killed after the car she was riding in slammed into a pole in Bushwick. Witnesses said the driver Sebastian Worwa, the victim's boyfriend, appeared intoxicated—he has since been charged with vehicular manslaughter in the second degree.
