On Sunday morning Amy Sanchez, 15, got up early to do some homework in her family's apartment in the Queensbridge Houses. And, much to her surprise, at 5:15 a.m. a stray bullet flew into her window, bounced off a wall and hit her in the hand! On the plus side yesterday, the NYPD arrested a 37-year-old man from Harlem whom they say discharged the errant bullet.
According to authorities, Day Bryant was taken into custody and charged with criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment. Police say the bullet that hit Sanchez's left hand was fired from Bryant's gun. What exactly spurred the early morning gunplay, which reportedly included singing, is not currently clear. Police say that Bryant has eight prior arrests that include drug possession and criminal trespassing.
Meanwhile, according to City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, who visited Sanchez in the hospital, the teen is "very shaken up" as she recovers at New York-Presbyterian. "One gunshot is too many. One 15-year-old girl shot is one too many."
