Police say a man was robbed, beaten, and possibly shot on the Lower East Side early Friday morning.

According to an NYPD spokesman, the victim, a 31-year-old man, was grabbed from behind in front of 103 Clinton Street between Delancey and Rivington. The assailant then stole two gold chains and one gold ring from the victim, before beating the victim with what the victim said was the butt of a gun.

The victim told police he heard a gunshot, and began bleeding profusely from his mouth, leading him to believe that he had been shot in the face. The assailant fled, and the victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. It's unknown as to whether a shot was fired, and police at the 7th Precinct are investigating the incident as an assault and robbery.
