As police patrols have been stepped up in Riverside Park after two women were attacked on July 5—one near 120th Street and the other at 98th Street—the Post reports that a homeless man was arrested for allegedly trying to attack three women who were tanning in the park between 11:50 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. in the Riverside Park South section. One of the victim, aspiring actress Raili Munson, said, "Since moving to New York, this is the scariest thing that's happened to me."
John Jeter, 49, was charged with attempted rape, sexual abuse and public lewdness. According to the Post, the first incident was at 11:50 a.m., when he saw a 23-year-old woman laying on her stomach near West 62nd Street and allegedly got on her. She was able to fight him off; he told cops, "I got turned on and wanted to have sex with her... I stayed on the grass playing with myself." Then, at 1:30 p.m., he was masturbating in front of 20-year-old: "When the repulsed woman tried to flee, Jeter grabbed her arm and forced her hand toward his body, but she managed to escape."
At 2:45 p.m., Munson, who was sunbathing in a bikini and listening to an iPod, opened her eyes to find Jeter standing in front of her, "He started trying to lay on top of me and then he fell on me. I was screaming for people to help me but no one came over." She ran away, only for Jeter to try to follow her. At that point, Munson was able to get the attention of a city marshal and tow truck drivers who were seizing scofflaws' cars. The NYC Marshals said, "They observed a man coming out of the park with his pants around his ankles, fully exposed, no underwear," and the three were able to hold Jeter until cops arrived.
