The police have made an arrest in the case of a 2011 Brooklyn playground shooting that killed 15-year-old Dequan Mercurius. Vincent Adeyeye, 17, was charged on Thursday with murder, attempted murder, weapons possession, second degree assault and reckless endangerment, among others.
Police believe that Adeyeye was responsible for unleashing gunfire at the P.S. 119 playground in Flatlands on July 16 of last year. In addition to being accused of fatally shooting Mercurius in the chest, Adeyeye allegedly shot a 13-year-old boy in the buttocks (the boy has since recovered). Neighborhood residents believed the incident was gang-related at the time, though police have yet to release information as to whether Adeyeye has any local street affiliation. Mercurius, a former P.S. 119 student, was remembered as "happy go-lucky," and a "good kid" and family members say he was not involved with gangs.
