A man was arrested last night for the attempted rape of a woman running in Central Park. Police sources confirmed to the Daily News and the Post that 21-year-old Saul Alvarez allegedly grabbed a 29-year-old woman running on East Drive near East 106th Street at around 10:45 p.m. Saturday night. Police say Alvarez put his hand around the woman's mouth as he attempted to drag her off into a wooded area before she broke free. A person nearby heard the woman's screams and called 911, and police apprehended Alvarez shortly after the call.

The victim was treated for cuts, and Alvarez was charged with attempted rape and forcible compulsion. Geoffrey Croft reports that police are investigating a rape of an 18-year-old woman that allegedly occurred in Crotona Park early Thursday morning.

Police sources told A Walk In The Park that the woman was walking in the park at around 4:45 a.m. when a man approached the victim, grabbed her hair, punched her, and raped her. The suspect is described as a 5'9" Hispanic male between the ages of 25-30. Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
