A 24-year-old man has been arrested for fatally shooting a borough cab driver this week, a crime authorities say was likely committed over a fare dispute.
The NYPD says that Nicholas Sanchez, a 24-year-old resident of The Bronx, shot 39-year-old Mamadou Barry in the head early Monday morning after the latter picked him up in his green borough taxi in Mott Haven. Police released surveillance video of the suspect on Tuesday, and Sanchez was arrested on Wednesday after witnesses who knew him informed officials.
Cops say Sanchez shot Barry after he drove him to a McDonald's in Belmont—he then allegedly fled on foot. He has been charged with murder, aggravated manslaughter, attempted robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Barry had three children and his wife, Kadiatou Jolloh, was expecting a fourth. “He took the best man ever,” Jolloh told the News. “I hope he dies in prison.” Barry is the first green cab driver to be killed on the job.
