The war against Christmas is brewing on Long Island: The Suffolk County police are investigating the theft of two wise men from a nativity scene in Saint James—and they are treating it as a hate crime.

The scene, set up by the St. James Chamber of Commerce, is at the intersection of N. Country Road and Lake Avenue. Police say two of the plastic figures were taken between Monday and Tuesday.

Suffolk County Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. It's unclear if the St. James Chamber of Commerce will enlist feral cats to take the missing wise men's place.
