They didn't get a hit until the fifth inning, but the Yankees had their chances in the final three frames. Unfortunately for them, they didn't cash in during a 2-1 loss to Boston. Marcus Thames hit a double off the very top of the right-field wall in the seventh inning. That set up runners on second and third and no one out, but the Yankees didn't score. In the eighth inning, Mark Teixeira hit a solo homer, but the Yankees again stranded the potential go-ahead run on base. In the ninth inning, Teixeira struck out with the tying run on second. The Yankees split a four-game set with the Red Sox and remain six games up. With Tampa Bay's win over Detroit, the Yankees' lead over the Rays sits at 1 1/2 games.
