With their 9-1 win over the Red Sox and the Tigers' 6-5 loss to the Orioles, the Yankees are no longer playing for anything during the regular season. Saturday's results assured that the Yankees will have homefield advantage in the American League in the division and league championship series. Freddy Garcia outpitched Jon Lester, who allowed eight runs and didn't get out of the third inning. With Tampa Bay's win over Toronto later Saturday, Boston's lead in the wild card race is only 1 1/2 games. The Yankees can continue to make their rivals nervous in a doubleheader on Sunday.
The Mets faced their rivals in a meaningless doubleheader on Saturday and took both games. R.A. Dickey helped them win the first, 2-1, when he took a no-hitter into the seventh. The Mets didn't take the lead until the bottom of the eighth. In the nightcap, Dillon Gee bagged the win. They won't have a winning season, but they can finish strong.
