Yankees 6 Minnesota 1: The Yankees are headed back to the ALCS. New York swept the Twins Saturday thanks to a solid effort from Phil Hughes and home runs by Marcus Thames and Nick Swisher. The Twins threatened in the 8th, loading the bases before Boone Logan and David Robertson extinguished the threat.
The Yankees will have to wait for the conclusion of the Rays-Rangers series to see where they are headed next. For now they know they will be playing in Tampa or Arlington next Friday.
Rangers 6 Buffalo 3: Derek Stepan exceeded the hype in his first NHL game. Hailed in training camp as an important piece of the Rangers’ future, Stepan validated that view with a hat-trick in his career debut. Brandon Dubinsky added two goals as New York got off to a great start.
Washington 7 Devils 2: Martin Brodeur was rocked as he allowed five goals on only 20 shots and he was pulled before the start of the third period. New Jersey actually led 2-1 before surrendering six-straight goals.
Dallas 5 Islanders 4 (Shootout): The Islanders rallied from deficits of 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2 to tie the game, but they fell in the shootout. Mike Ribeiro won it for Dallas by beating Rick DiPietro. John Tavares left the game with a concussion and is being evaluated.
Red Bulls 0 Salt Lake 0: Two playoff teams battled to a draw as the Bulls solidified their hold on first place in the Eastern Conference.
