In order for the Yankees to miss the playoffs, they would need to have a monumental collapse. But their play of late is hardly inspiring conference in their postseason chances. It's also not helping make things easy come October. A 7-3 loss at home to the Red Sox leaves them 1 1/2 games behind the Rays and 5 1/2 games ahead of Boston. Ivan Nova didn't pitch well and the Yankees didn't get a hit until the sixth inning. Dustin Moseley will start Sunday as the Yankees try to avoid the sweep. No one need panic yet, but none of this bodes well for the postseason.
At least the Mets prevented the Phillies from clinching a playoff berth in a 5-2 win at Philadelphia. How cruel for the Mets to be forced to be reminded of what they are missing. Luas Duda hit a three-run double in a five-run seventh to put off the celebration. The Mets snapped an 11-game Phillies winning streak and Dillon Gee picked up the second win. The Mets will try to play spoiler again Sunday.
