Yankees 6 Boston 5: The Yankees and Red Sox engaged in one of their typical games in the first game of their doubleheader. New York fell behind 2-0, led 3-2, saw things tied at 3, led 5-3 and saw things tied up again at 5 heading into the ninth. That’s where Phil Hughes put the Red Sox down in order and the Yankees scratched a run across in the 10th. Mariano Rivera set Boston down 1-2-3 to earn the save.
Boston 7 Yankees 6 (10 innings): New York took a 4-1 lead but thanks to sloppy play, AJ Burnett and the “B” team bullpen, they didn’t hold it. The Red Sox's Eric Patterson singleed off Ivan Nova in the bottom of the 10th inning. Now the Yankees and Rays are tied for first.
Mets 7 Washington 2: The Mets bullpen blew the lead, but the Mets offense bailed them out. David Wright hit a huge home run, a three-run shot with two outs in the 7th and Chris Carter came off the bench in the 8th to add a two-run shot. It made a winner of Ryota Igarashi and gives the Mets a chance at a sweep on Sunday.
Red Bulls 1 Kansas City 0: The Bulls are now in first thanks to the win. Dane Richards scored in the sixth minute to put New York on top for good.
