• Yankees 8, Rays 7 (10 innings): For the second straight night, these two playoff-bound teams needed more than nine innings to settle things. But this time, the Yankees came out on top. Jorge Posada hit a pinch-hit home run in the top of the 10th to put the Yankees on top after they blew a 6-0 lead. Mariano Rivera worked a scoreless 10th and was helped by some suspect baserunning by Carl Crawford, who got thrown out at third base to end the game. Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano also went deep. Ivan Nova started strong but wilted quickly, and Boone Logan gave up a three-run homer that put the finishing touches on Nova's six runs allowed. The teams play a rubber game on Wednesday, with Phil Hughes taking on James Shields.
  • Mets 9, Pirates 1: Too bad the Mets can't play the Pirates every night. The Mets pounded out 14 hits to pull within one game of .500. R.A. Dickey looked strong again and Carlos Beltran knocked in three runs. The Mets go for their third straight win over the pathetic Pirates on Wednesday.
