• Yankees 4, Angels 1: If the Angels have to face the CC Sabathia they faced tonight three times in this series, they might as well give the Yankees three wins right now. Sabathia dominated the Angels in Game 1 of the ALCS, pitching eight strong innings, allowing only four hits and one walk while striking out seven.

The Yankees scored all the runs they would need off John Lackey in the 1st inning when Derek Jeter scored on an Alex Rodriguez sac fly. They added another when Johnny Damon scored after a misplayed Hideki Matsui pop-up that barely made it past the infield dirt as third baseman Chone Figgins and shortstop Erick Aybar both watched Matsui's ball fall to the ground.

The Yankees added to their lead in the 5th inning when Damon scored again on a Matsui hit. A-Rod tried to score on the same hit, running past a stop sign by 3rd base coach Rob Thomson, but was out at home despite trying to run over Angels' catcher Jeff Mathis. [When was the last time you saw A-Rod do that, huh?] Lackey was removed from the game in the 6th after Jeter drove in the 4th Yankees run. Only two of the four runs scored against Lackey were earned.

Mariano Rivera closed out the game in the 9th inning for his second save of the post-season despite allowing a lead-off walk. It was Mo's 37th career post-season save.
  • Thrashers 4, Devils 2: Three goals in the 3rd period by the Thrashers, including a short-handed goal, gave Atlanta the win in New Jersey. It was the third loss in a row for the Devils at home.
  • Sabres 6, Islanders 3: Buffalo scored four goals against Dwayne Roloson before the Isles goalie was pulled from the game. It was all the Sabres, who haven't lost in regulation, would need to win.
