The Red Bulls eked out a 1-1 tie against Vancouver with Juan Agudelo's 68th minute goal. They are now 6th in the Eastern Conference.
Alex Rodriguez didn't start because of a thumb injury. Francisco Cervelli rested because of concussion concerns. Russell Martin left the game after taking a foul ball off his hand. (Jorge Posada caught for the first time this season.) Nick Swisher has tendinitis in his elbow. CC Sabathia needed 119 pitches in his six-inning, one-run outing. So when Dan Haren needed only 113 to throw his shutout, the Yankees fell for the fourth straight time in a 6-0 loss. Boston keeps losing, so the Yankees' lead in the American League East is still 2 1/2 games.
Jason Bay put the Mets ahead by a run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Mets' leaky bullpen wasted that advantage in a 5-4 loss to the Cubs. Bobby Parnell took the loss after Chris Capuano rebounded nicely from his previous disastrous start. The Mets and Cubs play a night game on Sunday and will remember Sept. 11 in a pregame ceremony.
