The Mets' trade of Heath Bell to the Padres for Ben Johnson and Jon Adkins is one of the worst trades no one talks about. Having Bell in 2007 or 2008 probably would have put the Mets in the playoffs. Instead they missed the postseason by one game in each season. But Monday night, the Mets beat Bell and weren't regretting one of Omar Minaya's many bad deals.
Lucas Duda hit a two-run single to cap a three-run ninth inning in the Mets' 9-8 win over San Diego in the opener of a four-game set. Angel Pagan, Jason Bay and David Wright all homered to give the Mets an early 4-1 lead, but the Mets gave it back before rallying late against the Padres' elite closer. The win mitigated the loss of Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy -- already known to be out for the year -- to the disabled list.
