John Tavares finally went without a point on Thursday, and his quiet outing didn't help the Islanders, who lost 4-1 to the Lightning in Tampa. Michael Grabner had the lone Islanders goal. New York had won three straight games, but all of those came at home in a season-opening four-game homestand. Tavares had a goal or an assist in each of those games. Al Montoya made 30 saves. Before the game, Rick DiPietro, who is recovering from a concussion, took shots in goal.
Later Thursday night, Ryan McDonagh scored with less than two seconds remaining in overtime to give the Rangers a 3-2 win over the Flames in Calgary.Marian Gaborik and former Flame Brandon Prust had the other Rangers goals. The Blueshirts won for twice in as many games on their Western Canada swing and have won in Vancouver and Calgary in the same season for the first time since 1896-87.
Thierry Henry was suspended and the Red Bulls needed help from an own goal, but they still beat the Philadelphia Union, 1-0, to clinch a playoff berth. They won because of an own goal in the eighth minute and currently sit in a tie for eighth (out of 10 ) playoff teams.
