• Royals 1, Yankees 0: The Yankees only sent 28 batters to the plate. That didn't bode too well for their chances. Their mighty bats managed only two hits off Royals starter Bryan Bullington in eight dominant innings and went down meekly against Joakim Soria in the ninth. Even a complete-game loss by A.J. Burnett couldn't get the Yankees a victory. That left the Yankees with a split in Kansas City against a team that is now 20 games under .500. They finished a six-game road trip with a 3-3 mark and sit one game ahead of the Rays in the American League East. The Red Sox trail by six games.

  • Phillies 3, Mets 1: Mike Pelfrey pitched well for a second straight start, but it wasn't enough. He allowed three runs in seven innings, but got only one run of support as the Mets fell in Sunday night's rubber game. A Jose Reyes solo homer in the third inning accounted for the Mets' only run. The Mets are 10 games out of the division and eight out of the wild card. It may be past the time to stick a fork in them.
