Red Sox 9, Yankees 5

: If Phil Hughes is fighting for his spot in the Yankees rotation, his performance against the Red Sox probably didn't help things. Hughes allowed six runs over 5 2/3 innings to drop to 4-5 for the season. Helping Hughes though is the fact that AJ Burnett pitches today in his own attempt to remain a starter. In spite of Hughes' efforts on the mound, the Yankees were actually able to take a brief lead in the 6th inning. Then Hughes pitched another 2/3 innings. The win put Boston up 1.5 games in the AL East.

Mets 3, Marlins 2: The Mets came from behind in the 7th inning to win again against the Marlins. The win was the 5th in the last 6 games for the Mets. After Jose Reyes singled in the 7th inning and advanced to 2nd on a sacrifice fly, Lucas Duda had the go-ahead RBI on a double. Bobby Parnell closed the game for his 3rd save of the season.

Also out in Flushing, Venus Williams withdrew from the US Open, citing her diagnosis of Sjögren's Syndrome, an autoimmune disease affecting her energy levels. In second round action for the women, Vera Zvonareva and Samantha Stosur advanced while 8 seed Marion Bartoli was upset by American Christina McHale in straight sets. Maria Sharapova is currently up one set in her match. For the men, Andy Murray, Andy Roddick and John Isner all advanced while Nicolas Almagro of Spain lost in straight sets.
