• Yankees 7, Blue Jays 6 (10 innings): For the second straight year, the Yankees beat the Blue Jays in extra innings on July 4. Marcus Thames hit two-out, pinch-hit single in the bottom of the 10th after Mariano Rivera squandered a one-run lead in the top of the ninth. Brett Gardner hit a game-tying inside-the-park homer a day after he hit a grand slam. Gardner's homer, which hit the glove of Blue Jays center fielder DeWayne Wise, was the latest "hit" by the Yankees to owe an assist to the sun. New All-Star Phil Hughes allowed three homers and five runs in six innings. Jorge Posada left the game after taking a foul tip off a finger on his gloved hand. The Yankees head to the West Coast before the All-Star break.
  • Mets 9, Nationals 5: Jason Bay had four RBIs as the Mets got out of DC with a split. The Mets scored the first eight runs of the game and then held on as the Nationals made it interesting against Hisanori Takahashi and the Mets bullpen. One day after imploding, Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth to record his 20th save.
