- Rangers 2 Philadelphia 0: These teams really do not like each other and it was evident early on Monday night. The gloves came off just 54 seconds into the game and another fight broke out seven minutes in. That ended the boxing portion of the evening, but both teams continued to hit hard and often in a physical contest at MSG.
The Rangers dominated the first period, but would have had nothing to show for it without a great goal from Jaromir Jagr. Jagr streaked down the left side of the ice with under a minute remaining in the game and snapped a shot right by Martin Biron. It was one of the rare mistakes Biron made all night as he faced 45 shots and stopped all but two of them.
Henrik Lundqvist was brilliant in goal, stopping all 30 shots and making several big saves to keep the game at 1-0. That’s where things stayed until Brendan Shanahan blasted a slap shot past Biron with under four minutes in the third period to clinch the win for New York.
- Pittsburgh 5 Devils 0: Martin Brodeur didn’t have it, giving up five goals on 24 shots and he was pulled in the third period. Sidney Crosby had two goals and Petr Sykora added two points as the Penguins cruised to an easy win.
