• Yankees 9, Athletics 3: Phil Hughes did not pitch well. He walked five and struck out one in five innings as he allowed two runs. But the Yankees' offense did play well, and that was enough for Hughes to earn his 16th win. Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher all went deep off Hackensack, N.J., product Vin Mazzaro as the Yankees roughed up an Oakland starter for the second straight day. With Tampa Bay's loss to Toronto, the Yankees lead the American League East by one game. They also have an eight-game lead over the Red Sox.
  • Braves 9, Mets 2: The Braves beat the Mets at Turner Field in a late-August series. What else is new? Jon Niese gave up eight runs -- three earned -- in 4 2/3 innings as the Mets bats abandoned their starter. Luis Castillo's fifth-inning error helped key a seven-run Atlanta outburst and Niese's early exit. In other news, the Mets traded Jeff Francouer to the Rangers for utility infielder Joaquin Arias.
