Hours after they failed to persuade the Orioles to play a doubleheader Friday, the Yankees fell, 12-5, in an opener vs. Baltimore. A.J. Burnett gave up six runs in the second and nine runs overall in his 11th loss this season. The Yankees, who came back from six runs down on Thursday against Oakland, had no such comeback in them on Friday. They will not play Saturday but will instead try to play a doubleheader Sunday after Hurricane Irene makes its way through Baltimore. With Boston's loss to Oakland, the Yankees still trail the Red Sox by a game in the American League East.
Chris Capuano threw perhaps the best game pitched by a Met this season in a 6-0 blanking of the Braves. He struck out 13 and walked none in a two-hit shutout. That's it for the Mets-Braves series this weekend, however. The two teams won't play Saturday or Sunday as they anticipate the arrival of Hurricane Irene.
