  • Yankees 3, Rangers 0: Mike Mussina and the Yankees can't afford to keep splitting four-game series. But when the team enters the finale having lost two of the first three, what choice do they have? Derek Jeter hit a home run as the game's second batter. Mussina followed that up with seven scoreless innings, striking out six and walking one. That's an impressive outing against the best offense in baseball. Brian Bruney, Damaso Marte and Mariano Rivera finished the job. The Yankees travel to Anaheim next. Ian Kennedy and Dan Giese will start in the first two games.

  • Mets 5, Padres 3: Sooner or later, this Mets bullpen is going to break some hearts and really trash the Mets' season. On Thursday, it just gave David Wright the chance to hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. Johan Santana has only nine wins this year, but that's not his fault. He has a 2.85 ERA and has pitched about as well as can be expected. The same cannot be said for Duaner Sanchez and Scott Schoeneweis. The Mets host National League East rival Marlins this weekend.
