Desperate to avoid another crippling start to the season, the Devils looked sharp in a 4-2 win over the Hurricanes on Columbus Day. Ilya Kovalchuk put the Devils ahead to stay with a goal with 6:06 to go. He also had two assists. Zach Parise had the first Devils goal and the empty-netter at the end. The Devils are 1-1.
The Islanders proved that sometimes how a team starts is more important than how it finishes. Andrew MacDonald and Frans Nielsen scored two minutes 40 seconds apart in the first period. The Islanders got a dependable performance from goalie Al Montoya and won despite having five total shots after the first period. That formula won't work too often.
