A 68-year-old man died in a fire in his Queens home this morning, according to police. Fire officials say he was found dead in the basement of 106-14 97 Avenue in Jamaica after the fire was extinguished.

The victim, identified by police as landlord Mohinvei Singh, 68, woke up at around 2:30 a.m this morning and went down to the basement to check on rising smoke, according to the Daily News. When his son woke up shortly after, his bedroom was full of smoke, and when he went to check on his father, "He couldn't find him," Singh's son-in-law, Raman Deol, told the News.

Several other tenants in the building noticed the fire. "I went to the kitchen to check the stove but I couldn't turn on the light," 25-year-old Sandeep Kaur, who lives on the second floor, said. "None of the power was on. My first thought was to get out of the house. I didn't have a chance to grab my shoes."

Singh, who arrived in New York 30 years ago from Punjab, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
