A linebacker on the Kansas City Chiefs fatally shot his girlfriend and then himself this morning, according to multiple reports. The player has been identified as Jovan Belcher, a linebacker originally from Long Island. According to The Kansas City Star, 25-year-old Belcher shot his girlfriend multiple times around 8 a.m. at his girlfriend's home, then went to the Chiefs practice facility where he shot himself.
Belcher's girlfriend's mother was reportedly in the home at time of the shooting. The Star adds that Chiefs team personnel met Belcher in the parking lot where they tried to stop him from "additional acts of violence." There were no other injuries reported at the facility. According to Buzzfeed's Jack Moore, sources told them that "the player thanked the coaches and [general manager Scott] Pioli for all they'd done for him before committing suicide."
The Chiefs released this statement about the incident: “We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.” Belcher attended West Babylon High School, and has played for the Chiefs for four seasons.
