An elderly Queens man was fatally struck by a motorist while crossing Meeker Avenue in Greenpoint this morning. According to the NYPD's preliminary investigation, Joseph Ranieri, 71, was trying to cross Meeker from south to north when the 30-year-old driver of a 2012 Jeep hit him while going eastbound on Meeker.
Police say the driver hit Ranieri in front of 958 Meeker Avenue, which appears to be approximately in the middle of a long, industrial block near Newtown Creek. Ranieri was lying unconscious in the road when police and EMS arrived at the scene shortly after 6 a.m. He was taken to Woodhull Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The unnamed driver remained on the scene and has not been charged.
