Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd may have clumsy, slick hands, or he may have intentionally spilled his soda all over the Barclays Center court during the Nets' Wednesday night bout against the Lakers as a sly tactic to buy more time. Whatever the reason, the NBA fined him $50,000 for the incident.
A video of the episode shows Kidd mouthing what appear to the words "hit me" to Nets reserve Tyshawn Taylor, who obediently chest-bumps his coach, sending the soda sailing to the floor. "Aw jeez!" Kidd seems to say, surveying the mess briefly before using the ensuing clean up time to diagram a play. What else do you do when you're down 94 to 99, with 8.3 seconds left in the game and no time outs?
The NBA fined Kidd, who impishly denied any foul play behind the spilled soda, insisting that he had "sweaty palms" and was "never good with the ball." This is a little joke: He was one of the best point guards in NBA history. The Nets, of course, still lost the game.
