Yesterday afternoon, a 73-year-old man driving a Lexus SUV struck a woman who was pushing her 6-month-old son in a stroller on Broadway near 37th Street in Astoria, Queens. The Daily News reports that the vehicle "shot down the sidewalk like a pinball... It blazed a trail of destruction for about half a block before it mowed the woman down from behind - sending her son and the stroller hurtling through the air." Amazingly, the boy did not appear to be hurt when he landed. The mother, who was rescued from beneath the car, is expected to survive. The driver allegedly told the cops his brakes failed and wasn't charged or given a summons; a police source said, "It's just an accident."
