Spotted on the L Train between Bedford and First Ave yesterday at around 5pm, an individual taking on, at length: the Daily News, Andrew Cuomo, unfair taxation and Michael Bloomberg. All in one very thorough protest sign.

In keeping with the vogue of what passes for political journalism these days, let's run a quick "fact-check" on the largest subway protest sign witnessed in recent memory.

Sign sez: "For every $100.00 school teachers make...they pay $25.00...Bloombergs and Romneys....pay $13.90."

Fact or fiction? Fiction. Figuring out the tax rate of a school teacher in NYC is near impossible, considering the myriad factors one has to take in. To which tax is the poster referring? Surely the rich aren't paying as much as they could, but Bloomberg did claim to pay a tax rate of 35% in 2011.

Sign sez: "Tuesday, January 21, 2014 The Daily News..."

Fact or fiction? Fact. That's pretty much what they said. Not exactly, but close enough.

Sign sez: "Unless you are a filthy greedy rich person.... The Daily News is your enemy."

Fact or fiction? Both. The Daily News has shifted ever rightward over the years, and lets people like Mike Lupica write about why Ray Kelly is the greatest and black people should be harassed from the comfy confines of his Greenwich, Connecticut estate. However, the Daily News is still home to outstanding investigative journalists like Juan Gonzalez, who have been sticking it to the man for decades. In fact, the story right below the one about Cuomo shooting down De Blasio's Pre-K plan was part of a multi-day series on airport workers fighting for fair pay.

Think of the Daily News as your somewhat retrograde, union-member uncle. It hates taxes and is wary of change, but boy does it dislike corruption and when fatcats screw over the working man.

Sign sez: The Daily News are so ashamed of what they do...

Fact or fiction? Fiction. Daily News staffers most likely wear their press ID's only when they have to for events so they don't end up looking like an asshole on the subway, wearing a press ID for no damn reason. Or they hide them whenever this guy comes around because c'mon....

Sign sez: Gov. Cuomo's $2 billion tax break and pre-k are a big scam...

Fact or fiction? Fact. With the regional transit network in tatters, rising tuition costs for state and city colleges, and depressed cities throughout upstate, Cuomo's tax break is the very essence of a handout by someone looking to be president.

Sign sez: Bloomberg got 6 million a day after taxes...

Fact or fiction? Fact-ish. Bloomberg made billions while in office. In his last year, he made $5 billion dollars. How that breaks down daily... might be 6 million?

What do you say New Yorkers? Do the loose use of facts invalidate this sign, or does it try to paint a larger portrait of the complete consolidation of wealth and power and the total incapacity by New Yorkers and their chosen tabloid to wage a true class war? Maybe we need to get our own giant sign to help gather our thoughts on this one...
