A 21 year old Hunter College student committed suicide by jumping off the West Building at 67th and Lexington yesterday afternoon. Anton Frolov had sneaked onto the 20 floor building's roof earlier, but had been escorted off by security guards. But 15 minutes later, at 5:40PM, Frolov managed to get back onto the roof and jumped before guards could stop him.
A witness told the Post, "It was like a blown tire. It was so loud, I knew something was wrong as soon as I heard it." It was so loud that some people in the area called 911 and reported gunfire or a bomb, according to the Times. Another witness told the Daily News that a priest gave Frolov last rites "but he was already dead. It's heartbreaking."
Frolov's family lives in Midwood. The Daily News reports that some believe Frolov had been depressed about his mother's death. Hunter College said, "Our hearts go out to the student's family for their tragic loss."
