Firefighters spent hours battling a four-alarm fire that broke out in a Yonkers dollar store yesterday afternoon. The Dollar K store on South Broadway was completely destroyed while neighboring apartment buildings were evacuated.

According to the Journal News, "It took six hours for crews to bring the blaze under control as the building’s roof collapsed, along with several heavy air-conditioning units, [assistant fire chief John] Darcy said. Crews were expected to remain at the scene through the night and workers will take down what remains of the building, he said." (WABC 7 has photos of the fire department's efforts.) Seven firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but some residents were told it started in the store's basement which had flammable materials in it.
