A 34-year-old man was stabbed with an ice pick in a homeless shelter in Greenpoint last night. According to police, the incident happened inside the Greenpoint shelter on McGuinness Boulevard around 12:30 a.m. The man, who hasn't been identified, was stabbed in the neck and chest; he is currently in critical condition at Bellevue Hospital. Two men, ages 48 and 50, have been taken into custody, but no charges have been filed yet.

That 200-bed homeless shelter, which opened last summer, is a topic of controversy for neighborhood residents, many of whom protested its opening (including City Councilman Steve Levin). There has been a recent uptick in crimes around the area—including terrifying home invasions, gunpoint robberies of musicians, transplant pistol-whippings—all of which has hurt the perception of the neighborhood. Some locals recently decided to pitch in and help patrol the neighborhood by forming volunteer watch groups.
