As the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues in Gaza, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is visiting the Middle East to help ease tensions. The NY Times reports, "Mrs. Clinton, who accompanied [President] Obama on his three-country Asia trip, left on her own plane immediately for the region, where she will stop first in Jerusalem to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, then head to the West Bank to meet with Palestinian leaders and finally to Cairo to consult with Egyptian officials."

On Sunday, Obama said that Israel had a right to defend itself, "[T]here is no country on earth that would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders," and expressed American support for Israel. The Times notes, "Mr. Obama made a number of late-night phone calls from his Asian tour to the Middle East on Monday night that contributed to his conclusion that he had to become more engaged and that Mrs. Clinton might be able to accomplish something." It's believed the death toll is currently at 113 this morning; the BBC says, "More than 110 Palestinians and three Israelis have been killed... Local journalists say they saw Hamas fighters summarily execute six people on Tuesday afternoon for being Israeli informers."

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsy claimed today, "The travesty of the Israel aggression on Gaza will end in a few hours," but Israel has not confirmed that. On Sunday, Senator John McCain said, "I would find someone even as high-ranking, frankly, as former President Bill Clinton to go and be the negotiator. I think that it's very important that we recognize that the United States of America has got to push as hard as we can to resolve this Israeli-Palestinian issue. And so many events hinge on making that process go forward."

Israel and Hamas have been Tweeting about the violence, Israel via @IDFSpokesperson and Hamas via @AlqassamBrigade. The New Yorker looks at the social media propaganda, "Both sides have published images of children slain: a classically effective tactic."
