A public school dean in Manhattan accused of having sex with four of his students has pleaded guilty to raping a 16-year-old girl. He has been sentenced to 90 days in jail.
Malik Taylor, 32, resigned from his position at the Business of Sports School in Midtown last May after investigators found he had allegedly unprotected sex with a number of female students. One of those students was 16 years old at the time, and yesterday Taylor pleaded guilty to charges of rape and endangering the welfare of a child. He told judge Justice Charles Solomon that he "didn’t know her age," and "didn’t know what grade she was in."
According to a Department of Investigation report [pdf], Taylor admitted to knowing that the student was underage at the time; he allegedly admitted to having sex with her five times. The report states that he also had sexual relations with two 17-year-old students and a 19-year-old student; he is accused of sending them and several other female students lewd text messages, telling one he wanted to see her "ass shake," and asked another if he could "at least suck on [her] boobs." Students told investigators that Taylor did not use condoms during sex.
The plea deal includes a 90-day jail sentence and 10 years of probation. Taylor will also be listed on the state’s sex offender registry.
"My client is deeply regretful and glad to put this whole thing behind him,” lawyer Nathan DeCorpo told the court after the deal was reached. The Department of Education tells us Taylor's behavior was "completely reprehensible." He has been prohibited from teaching in city schools.
