Police have determined that a man found dead in a Harlem air shaft on Wednesday was murdered.

The body of Derek Sutton, 50, was discovered on Wednesday morning at the bottom of an air shaft running between two buildings near 7th Ave at West 119th Street. Initially, investigators speculated that the victim, who was dressed in all black, was a burglar who had fallen into the shaft while trying to break into an apartment. Yesterday, though, the medical examiner determined Sutton was the victim of a homicide.

They do not know how long Sutton's body was in the air shaft. "I saw the body," the super at 1971 Adam Clayton Powell Blvd, Silvano Gomez, told the Daily News. "I've never seen him before. ... His skin is discolored and bruised. I've never seen anything like that."

Authorities say Sutton lived one block away, on West 118th Street. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
