A Greenpoint man who was shot earlier this week, allegedly by his neighbor, ex-cop Gene Barrett, has died of his injuries according to the NYPD.

Joe Stepinski, 45, had been on life support at Bellevue Hospital, after Barrett allegedly shot him in the head on the sidewalk of their apartment at 185 Greenpoint Avenue on Monday afternoon. Stepinski died of his injuries in the hospital on March 10, according to police. Barrett is currently facing charges including attempted murder and assault, and police are still investigating what it was that led to the fatal dispute.

Stepinski's girlfriend, Melissa Rotundo, was Barrett's landlord. Barrett's friend told ABC7 that Barrett told him that "his landlord hired people to do bad things to him, so he would leave the neighborhood so his rent-stabilized apartment would be given up," and that Stepinski had become involved in the arguments between Rotundo and Barrett.
